  • Here's Why Epson Provides the Best Inks

    Innovative Ink Cartridge Technology

Epson cartridges are more than just plastic containers filled with ink. Each cartridge contains a great deal of technology, including SmartValve technology that enables an even ink flow and helps you produce outstanding prints.

    Epson Intellidge Technology

You don't want to run out of ink while working on that important project or printing your favorite photos. The Intellidge chip from Epson lets you know when your printer/all-in-one is running low on ink, before you run out.

    Epson's Ink Quality Control

Epson manufactures its inks in 'clean rooms' in compliance with the highest standards to ensure that Epson inks deliver reliable, smudge and fade resistant, quality output.

I purchased this cartridge for my Epson Stylus Pro 3800. Although my previous Magenta cartridge did not say it was out (3% remaining), my print quality was degrading and I figured a new cartridge would allow me to clean my printer head and resolve the issue. Upon installing this and performing a cleaning, my printer is going just like new again. I have only used genuine Epson cartridges in my printer and have found them to be of a very high quality with prints lasting so far for 10 years with no fading.
They say that these cartridges should be replaced every 2 years whether or not you have emptied them. The cartridge I bought is stamped March 2018 meaning this cartridge has been sitting for 7 months already. However, upon using these cartridges, I have not found that anything happens to them after two years. If you look at my picture, the Cyan cartridge was manufactured in 2012 and is still producing colors just fine.

Huge difference between pay me now or pay me later. I''ve had a number of Epson "consumer" inkjets in both narrow and wide carriage formats. They had the multiple tanks, all very small and about $15 a tank. My photography work finally expanded to where I took the leap to the Professional grade Epson 3880 printer. At $1700, the up front investment was huge, but I can see where I am going to make it all up on ink costs. The ink tanks in the 3880 are huge.

What I found with the other printers was that I''d pay a couple of hundred dollars for the printer, then pay through the nose in the rapid depletion of ink. Besides the wider carriage capability of the 3880, the inks last forever, or it seems. I kept track of what I''ve printed since getting it. I''ve printed 150 posters at 13x19, 75 large format prints at 17x22, almost 450 at 8x10, and during all that was experimenting with printing on metal, wood, and canvas. I bought this tank because I was finally down to about 25% on it and wanted a replacement ready to go. The rest of the tanks are no lower than 35%.

Yeah, the tanks are $50 each, but when you consider how much longer they last than the ones in the consumer world, it really saves money in the long run. Amazon continues to be the best and most cost effective source for my Epson inks.

I only use genuine Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink Cartridges for my Epson 3800 printer.

The T580100 is for Photo Black and works with the 3800 & 3880 Epson printers. The prints with the K3 inks and printer combination are just stunning.

    PROS:
    - Genuine Epson ink
    - Stunning prints
    - Pigment ink is archival quality
    - 80 ml is a lot of ink

    CONS:
    - Of course we always want cheaper ink, but then 80 ml goes a long way so you get what you pay for.

    TIPS:
    - If you don''t print "often", you might consider running a Manual nozzle check about weekly to keep the ink flowing. The frequency may vary based on the humidity of the room, age of your inks, etc., but you want to avoid clogged nozzles!!! A friend of mine spent $700 to have his print heads replaced due to clogs. Ouch!

    - If the nozzle check shows a few breaks in the print pattern, wait 15 minutes and then run another Manual nozzle check. If your printer is slightly clogged, this may resolve the problem. Hope this helps!

I wrote a review of this ink several weeks ago in which I said it did not print clearly on plain paper. I did not point out that I use an Epson Sure Color P800 printer, on which one changes its settings to match the paper being used. When setting it to print on plain paper one uses the Plain Paper settings. Instead of that setting, I changed to the Proofing Paper setting and it printed perfectly.

I have been using Epson printers the last decade, and I have also concluded that 80ml as used in the 3800 and the current 3880 printers is just about the smallest ink cartridge that makes monetary sense if you do any proper volume of printing. Any smaller and cheaper printer with lower capacity ink cartridges - also from Epson - will soon have cost you more than the professional A2 printers. From experience, I have also found that there is no need to worry about expiry dates on ink cartridges - at least not with these - as I have some that are more than two years over now (I''ve not printed as much as I used to the last few years), but there''s been no problem with clotting, clogging or colours being off. I can''t compare it to third-party inks as I''d never gamble by putting anything like that through a £1,000 printer. I''ll stick to the originals, thank you very much. I know that they work, that they last, I know exactly how they behave and how I have to adjust my prints to make them exactly the way I want them. To this day, Epson Ultrachrome is the best inkset I have used, with the nicest colour transitions and shades of (very neutral) greys, negligible metamerism, an excellent gamut, and no clogging problems - though that is probably also due to the printer as the 3800-series seem to historically have had fewer complaints about that than Epson''s other offerings.

Any smaller and cheaper printer with lower capacity ink cartridges - also from Epson - will soon have cost you more than the professional A2 printers. It varies depending on what you print, of course, but at £35 per cartridge, my calculations indicate a price of 1p per square inch with the 3880''s ink. That''s almost exactly £1 per full-bleed A4 sheet. Based on numbers I found online that in my experience seem relatively accurate, changing blacks costs a bit over £1 as well, though with a bit of planning, one can avoid doing that too often. From experience, I have also found that there is no need to worry about expiry dates on ink cartridges - at least not with these - as I have some that are more than two years over now (I''ve not printed as much as I used to the last few years), but there''s been no problem with clotting, clogging or colours being off.
